My Commute

Here’s a photo from my commute last week.

Nice, eh?

I’m commuting on the SF->Sausalito ferry to my Occupational Therapy Center volunteership. I’m upping from once a week to twice a week starting next week. Right now I travel:
Home –> Bart to Embarcadero –> Ferry to Sausalito –>bike to office.
It takes about 1 hr 10 minutes, costs $6.85 with about 1.5 miles of biking each way.

I’m going to try and bike the whole route, which involves a 12.8 mile ride going over the Bay Bridge Golden Gate Bridge! It should take about 1 1/2 hrs each way.

do you have a one way bike ride option? I used to do 10-ish miles to waltham, and since it was against the major rush, I could take the bike on board the commuter rail if I didnt have the gas to ride both directions.

seriously nice view for a commute. No wonder everyone raves about SF.

ah, you mean biking over the GG bridge – was about to be all “hey there’s no bike lane on the bay bridge yet”

that’s cool, if you’re tired at the end of the day you can always ferry back instead of humping out of sausalito back up to the northern side of the bridge (which has always seemed harder to me than the other side coming up out of crissy field, though i imagine they are the same height from sea level)

Don’t you mean biking the whole route over the Golden Gate Bridge? You could bike the Bay Bridge, but you’d have to maintain a serious head of steam to not get plastered.

Are you saying that fresh Bay breezes are better than my commute of dodging mid-Market crackheads who jump out into the bike lane?? Shocking! :-)

I’m always a fan of multi-modal, but I’m also a fan of being cheap AND not lugging my bike in the BART elevators, so I’d prolly just bike to the Ferry Building. Biking over the GG Bridge is truly amazing, but surely adds time, although those ferries aren’t so fast… Depends on the weather, too. I’m pretty fickle.

At any rate, think of me in the bike lane avoiding human feces as you frolic about with the seagulls. :-)

Luke, yeah, I can do the ride one-way. Right now I bring my bike on the ferry and ride about 2 miles each way in Sausalito from the ferry to the facility. I am certainly planning on doing the first trip one-way and then build up to more. I’ve been having some knee problems, I’ll blog about that soon, I’ve got to ramp up my distance slowly!

It’s a totally awesome ferry ride!

And it’s great to hear from you Luke!

Ha! I had a conversation with a random biker on the train and she said exactly the same thing about getting out of the Sausalito gravity well!

    Oop! You are correct sir!

Alexis, your imagery of the Market Street cavalcade is terrifyingly accurate. I pity your situation! I do! That ride up Market always gives me the creeps! I will throw a penny off the GG bridge and wish a better ride for you (and hopefully not hit a passing schooner captain!)
