I’m Teaching Real Bread in 10 Minutes

I’ll be teaching a class with the Institute of Urban Homesteading in Oakland on the evening of May 18th :-) Wanna learn how to make bread the EASY way?

Here’s the description.

Making bread is easier, faster and more flexible than you thought. You can make fantastic bread every day inexpensively with less than 10 minutes effort, including cleanup! In our class, you’ll learn a set of techniques that will let you minimize the ordinary and maximize the extraordinary parts of making bread at home.

Some things we’ll talk about: instant yeast vs sourdough, refrigerated dough, crust, crumb, shaping, amendments, the chemistry and biology of bread, and the thousands of varieties of this staple food. Once you have the foundations, you’ll see bread recipes as suggestions instead of steps to be followed. The sky is the limit! We will eat and bring home what we make in class.

WHAT? 10 minutes? Dude, I don’t even have a pen ready!! You have to give me more notice next time, jeez!

I SO wish I could check it out. I have heard good reviews of your work. Jim Lahey, move over! :-)

The official IUH calendar is up, and I’m on it, right between “Olive Picking & Brining” and
    “Tempeh-Making for the Masses” :-)

Love the Institute for Urban Homesteading! From afar, but still. Wish I could be there! Have you heard of the kerfuffle over the trademarking of the term “urban homesteading” (and subsequent takedown notices) by a family of urban homesteaders in southern CA? That’s just crazy talk. Viva urban homesteading!!!

Hey Molls, yeah, I heard of the trademarking issue. The IUH owner is trying to work out those issues. I don’t know how it’ll end up. Maybe the name of the IUH will change, maybe not. Hey can you think of a good replacement name for the IUH?

Here is some info from The Institute of Urban Homesteading about “UrbanHomesteadGate Update”, excerpted from the March Newsletter. The last link is a letter from the EFF.

A gigantic thank you to all who sent support, referrals, and suggestions after our mid-month plea. A lot has happened, including a huge response from homesteaders across the country, a micro-viral revolution on Facebook in which 5000+ joined our “Take Bacl” page in less than a week and a day of action where over 140 blogs about urban homesteading were posted For those of you interested in the long version of “what happened,” I am attaching a document outlining the events and explaining the legal situation. At this writing, the orginal Facebook pages have not been reinstated and projects who were affected are moving forward in different ways. The folks who wrote the book, The Urban Homsestead are being represented by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff.org), who wrote a very strong response letter to the Dervaes (link attached). Denver Urban Homesteading is working to file a petition to cancel the trademarks. After consulting several lawyers we at IUH also sent a response letter, expressing our surprise and asking for more information (also attached below). We have yet to receive a response. We are still exploring whether more concise legal action is neccesary. In the meantime, there is a second Green Monday Day of Action scheduled for March 7th. Post your Urban Homsteading Vids on YouTube. See Take Back the Urban Home-steading(s) page on FB for more information.
