Holiday Present

The perfect holiday present for me right now:

Gather a list of the five to ten most influential / favorite books and other media from your childhood up thru age eight or so and send it along. I’m looking for what to offer my daughter Abigail. Welcomed are books, music, video, television, movies. What media helped positively shape you?

Stephanie, thanks for the recommendations! I took a look at both and they look like they’d be good for her when she turns 5 or 6. I’ve put the books on my (rapidly growing!) spreadsheet of books to get her. Thanks again!

Richard Scarry was popular for me as a child as well as two of my kids (Ling Ling and Jackson).
Sandra Boynton worked well for Ling Ling and Olivia.
Benjamin’s favorites when he was very small were good old-fashioned Dr. Seuss.

I’d recommend board books for the latter two, but go with the real big paper books for Richard Scarry. The RS board books are just too simplistic.

Ling Ling is a few months past 8 now and she’s into chapter books. On that front, her favorites have been the Boxcar Children series as well as the Little House on the Prairie series and Charlotte’s Web.

    Hey Stevie,
When I found Richard Scarry’s What Do People Do All Day in the library, I flashed back to childhood something wonderful! We have loved reading it… and the Pickle Car holds a special place in her heart! Just today I got our first Sandra Boynton from the library! And we’ve been working our way through Seuss!

It’s good to know I’m starting to cover the bases for Abigail. Thanks!
