Oh. My. God.
Back in 2005 I came across this list. My sides hurt every time I look at it. Really. Try it. Caveat: if you haven’t ever played an RPG, your sides will remain pain-free.
I just revisited the site and see that there are now 1575 things that Mr. Welch is prohibited from doing. TheGlen is a fricking genius.
I have blatantly stolen his list. I very strongly encourage you to go to his Livejournal blog and read them there. Besides, there are loads of comments on his site.
Moreover, do not read too many of these at once. Bookmark this page. Stop reading after your sides start to hurt. You can come back next week or next year. We’ll be here for you.

Every time I fly my ears hurt upon decent. It’s been like that for as long as I’ve been flying. My ears just don’t clear themselves on their own. I have tried chewing gum and yawning and swallowing hard; they will sometimes work to get air into my ears but the technique I’m about to show you works every time.
- Tilt your head to the left and back slightly to straighten the Eustachian tube on the right side of your neck
- Pinch your nose with your fingers
- Blow gently out your nose. The pressure will release from the right ear fairly suddenly and with some discomfort for a few seconds. Best to do it slowly!
- Repeat with the other side
I have done just that on tens of flights over tens of years. I usually have to clear both ears 3 times during a decent. I make sure to do the procedure before too much pressure builds up. If there is a lot of pressure, it can be downright painful when the air releases. But the alternative is to be in pain and be partially deaf for an hour or two while the pressure equalizes on its own.
You just need the tiniest bit of air to make it into your ear so go easy!
Most every time I’m in a plane descending, I hear a child start to cry. My last flight, the kid was whining loudly for 30 minutes about all sorts of problems, “Mom, I want to sit with my mommy” (repeated 500 freaking times), “My arm hurts” (repeated 50 freaking times), “I’m thirsty” (repeated and repeated and repeated). I will bet that the kid was suffering from ear pain and didn’t even know it. It’s a really unusual pain that many kids have rarely or never even experienced… they don’t know where it’s coming from… inside their heads? ridiculous!
I think I’ll write a letter to some airlines and suggest they offer a pamphlet to families titled something like “Mommy, it Hurts! Helping Children Clear Their Ears During Descent“. What do you think?
I am being pelted with kosher salt sized hail on the top of san Bruno mountain! and I’m singing!
That was my Twitter post from the top of a wet rainy icy wonderful mountain top yesterday.
Hmm, I actually meant to say “rock salt sized” hail. :-)
Here’s the pix
I note that iPhone touch screens don’t work as well when they have water droplets on the screen. I’m guessing the conductance of the water drops confuses the capacitive sensors.
I’m looking at getting a new laptop computer.
I know I can’t recreate my dual monitor system at home so I’m shooting for small and carryable. I tried a 17″ wide-screen behemoth from Dell last year and it was awful: It weighed a frigging ton, occupied my entire bag and ran Vista.
I liked a 10″ netbook computer with a 94% size keyboard I saw at Radio Shack. 8 hour battery life, weighing 3 lbs. I forget which… it looked like they all were just awesome. The ones I tried all ran Notepad with blazing speed. Heh.
Some questions:
- Is Windows 7 as hari-kari inducing as Vista?
- A $350 laptop with all the horsepower of my desktop computer? What am I missing besides the screen space?
- If they are $350 from Radio Shack, where do I buy these laptops for free?
My friend Laura owns an apartment in New York City at about 185th st. It was severely damaged by bad plumbing work from an upstairs neighbor to the tune of $90,000+. The insurance companies are bickering and not fixing her home. She needs her place repaired and doesn’t have $90k to fix it now and sort it out later.
Can you help Laura find a real estate insurance lawyer near 185th st in New York City?
If so, please comment or email me and I’ll hook you all up.
Here is an excerpt of her plea
As you may have heard, much of my home, which we call Hanna Manor because there have been so many house guests over the last eight years, has been destroyed by water damage caused by my upstairs neighbor doing illegal plumbing Oct 24th. I’ve attached a few pictures so you get that is truly is destroyed, not just a couple of wet spots. The electric system also blew out so there is no power in most rooms.
Her insurance company, State Farm, for the last month has told me that they would cover it all, and house me until it is rebuilt. This afternoon, as a Thanksgiving surprise, they’ve informed me they won’t, as they believe it should all be taken care of under my homeowners’ co-op policy. Of course, the co-op does not agree. So I’m still in a hotel, which they will only cover through December, and everyone is saying it’s not their responsibility. I need help. I need a good attorney who will fight for me to save my home. Please, spare a few moments when you are at some Thanksgiving gathering this weekend, and ask who knows someone who might know someone, who might know someone.
I’m just about ready for Thanksgiving with the family. Hopefully my caps will go over well!

KOIT switched to Christmas programming today. I bumped and jammed to Bob Seger’s Little Drummer Boy, Frank Sinatra’s Santa Claus is Coming to Town, and Sarah McLachlan’s Happy Xmas for about 2 hours.
Ok, I’m done.
Bring on the Arbor Day music.
Julie Bernstein took many photos of lasertag this weekend. She’s a really good professional photographer.
Here’s the whole set of lasertag photos set.
