My daughter graduated from her preschool in Berkeley, CA in August 2021. In September 2019, they remodeled the front half of their campus, sparing no expense, using a reputable contractor. Since the remodel, I can’t stand to be in the new rooms! Why not? The new lighting flickers intensely at a high rate that about 1 in 20 people can see (including myself!). I recorded parts of the building using the slo-mo feature on my smartphone, it shows the flickering very clearly. Ask yourself, how would you feel if you experienced the room in this way? What if you were that 1-in-20 kid in that classroom?

I work in public schools. In 2019, I sat down in a classroom at a local middle school. I started to feel uneasy so I got out my phone and recorded this snippet of what the room looked like at 1/8th speed slo-mo. Notice how the sunlight outside isn’t flickering but the lights inside are. If you were a student in that room, might your ability to do schoolwork be impacted?
