{"id":5052,"date":"2012-06-01T13:43:16","date_gmt":"2012-06-01T20:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lee.org\/blog\/?p=5052"},"modified":"2012-06-01T13:43:16","modified_gmt":"2012-06-01T20:43:16","slug":"the-primary-is-now-more-important-than-the-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lee.org\/blog\/2012\/06\/01\/the-primary-is-now-more-important-than-the-election\/","title":{"rendered":"The Primary is Now More Important than the Election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>California just changed the election process so that the primary election (being held June 4th) is now more important than the election election (held this coming November).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Huh?&#8221; I hear you say.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sos.ca.gov\/elections\/2012-elections\/june-primary\/faqs-primary-2012.htm\">good description from the California Secretary of State<\/a> Debra Bowen<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2>What is a voter-nominated office?<\/h2>\n<p>The \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sos.ca.gov\/elections\/2012-elections\/june-primary\/pdf\/new-open-primary-info.pdf\">Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act<\/a>, which took effect January 1, 2011, created &#8220;voter-nominated&#8221; offices. The Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act does not apply to candidates running for U.S. President, county central committees, or local offices.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the offices that were previously known as &#8220;partisan&#8221; are now known as &#8220;voter-nominated&#8221; offices. Voter-nominated offices are state constitutional offices, state legislative offices, and U.S. congressional offices. The only &#8220;partisan offices&#8221; now are the offices of U.S. President and county central committee.<\/p>\n<h2>How are primary elections conducted in California?<\/h2>\n<p>All candidates for voter-nominated offices are listed on one ballot and <em><strong>only the top two vote-getters in the primary election \u2014 regardless of party preference &#8211; move on to the general election<\/strong><\/em>. A write-in candidate will only move on to the general election if the candidate is one of the top two vote-getters in the primary election.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sos.ca.gov\/elections\/2012-elections\/june-primary\/faqs-primary-2012.htm\">read more<\/a>)<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s weird. We&#8217;ll see how that goes.
