Here&#8217;s the software I put back on my computer immediately, the essential software that makes Windows XP useable for me:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/antibody-software.com\/web\/software\/software\/wizmouse-makes-your-mouse-wheel-work-on-the-window-under-the-mouse\/\">WizMouse<\/a> &#8211; lets you scroll a window without you having to give it focus. Brilliantly simple and useful.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/crashplan.com\">Crashplan<\/a> &#8211; I would have lost data if not for this online backup tool.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.editpadpro.com\/\">EditPad Pro<\/a> &#8211; my text editor of choice. It also comes in a free version that&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.editpadlite.com\/\">fine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.autohotkey.com\/\">Autohotkey<\/a> &#8211; giving me <a href=\"http:\/\/lee.org\/blog\/2011\/03\/07\/autohotkey-is-great\/\">keyboard controls<\/a> like Ctrl-Alt-C for Calculator and &#8220;..4&#8221; to automatically type my phone number.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/chrome\">Google Chrome<\/a> \u00a0&#8211; the best, fastest, easiest to use, prettiest browser.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/kcnhkahnjcbndmmehfkdnkjomaanaooo\">Google Voice Extension<\/a> \u00a0&#8211; Along with my Google Voice account, it&#8217;s easier to dial a call with this than picking up my phone<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/cpngackimfmofbokmjmljamhdncknpmg\">Screen Capture Extension<\/a> \u00a0&#8211; an excellent browser screen capture tool<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/dgpdioedihjhncjafcpgbbjdpbbkikmi\">Speed Dial Extension<\/a> \u00a0&#8211; the best homepage for a browser ever<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cccp-project.net\/\">CCCP<\/a> &#8211; the Combined Community Codec Pack lets Windows Media Player play most every video format automatically<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moffsoft.com\/freecalc.htm\">Freecalc<\/a> &#8211; by Moffsoft, a better calculator than the built-in Windows one. Easy, clean.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/picasa.google.com\/\">Picasa<\/a> &#8211; the best home picture viewer<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.codesector.com\/teracopy.php\">Teracopy<\/a> &#8211; replaces windows file copy&#8230; the best feature being if a copy fails, I see what happened and can recover, unlike Windows copy<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/renameit\/\">Rename-It!<\/a> &#8211; lets me rename files en-mass<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stevemiller.net\/puretext\/\">PureText <\/a> &#8211; strips text formatting when pasting.<\/p>\n<p>Put \u00a0Windows Explorer in the Quicklaunch toolbar and change the startup options target to &#8220;%SystemRoot%\\explorer.exe \/e,c:\\aaa&#8221;. <a href=\"http:\/\/lee.org\/blog\/2010\/04\/18\/how-to-start-windows-explorer-with-different-options\/\">More examples<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lee.org\/blog\/2011\/11\/09\/how-to-set-gmail-as-the-default-email-in-chrome\/\">Set Gmail to be the default email client in Chrome<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lee.org\/blog\/2009\/04\/25\/how-to-disable-windows-search-when-searching-windows-explorer\/\">Disable Windows Search When Searching Windows Explorer<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.truecrypt.org\/\">Truecrypt<\/a> &#8211; keeps my passwords safe on my computer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<br \/>\nThe second round of essential software<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lee.org\/blog\/2010\/09\/06\/flash-cookies-aka-local-shared-objects\/\">KFC<\/a> &#8211; Kill Flash Cookies<br \/>\nFilezilla<br \/>\nUltraVNC<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/lee.org\/blog\/2009\/01\/12\/lee-recommends-computer-programs\/\">Sysinternals<\/a> tools are amazing. Filemon to see what is slowing down my hard drive, Pagedefrag to defrag your pagefile.sys. Several tools to help find malware<\/p>\n<p>DVD Decrypter (<a href=\"http:\/\/lee.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/DVD-Decrypter.zip\">local archive<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/typography\/cleartype\/tuner\/step1.aspx\">Cleartype<\/a> &#8211; absolutely essential for good text quality on Windows XP!
