It is 1024 or 1000? It&#8217;s kind of ambiguous, isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>Nope, this problem was solved in 1998.<br \/>\n1 <strong>kilo<\/strong>byte is 1000 bytes. That&#8217;s 10<sup>3<\/sup>.<br \/>\n1 <strong>kibi<\/strong>byte is 1024 bytes. that&#8217;s 2<sup>10<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>And how do you abbreviate it?<br \/>\n1 kilobyte = 1 KB<br \/>\n1 kibibyte = 1 KiB<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, we&#8217;ve got<br \/>\nmegabyte (MB)\t10^6\t|\t<strong>mebibyte (MiB)<\/strong>\t2^20<br \/>\ngigabyte (GB)\t10^9\t|\t<strong>gibibyte (GiB)<\/strong>\t2^30<br \/>\nterabyte (TB)\t10^12 |\t<strong>tebibyte (TiB)<\/strong>\t2^40<br \/>\npetabyte (PB)\t10^15 |\t<strong>pebibyte (PiB)<\/strong>\t2^50<\/p>\n<p>This actually makes good sense.
