For every recommendation for a particular model, I read 2 recommendations against.<\/p>\n<p>Other recommendations I&#8217;ve seen (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.woodweb.com\/knowledge_base\/More_Fun_with_Stud_Finders.html\">via<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.garrettwade.com\/jump.jsp?itemType=PRODUCT&#038;itemID=105839\">Mechanical Stud Finder from Garrett Wade<\/a><\/p>\n<p>a magnet on a short string finds the nails<\/p>\n<p>Metal detector like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wizard-Detectors-24902-Little-Detector\/dp\/B00005NMUO\">Little Wizard metal detector<\/a><\/p>\n<p>a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jenson-Distributing-47-400-FINDER-MAGNETIC\/dp\/B0000BYD3K\/sr=1-18\/qid=1165697178\/ref=sr_1_18\/103-0414354-2554200?ie=UTF8&#038;s=hi\">magnet-thing<\/a> in a case kind of like a compass finds the nails<\/p>\n<p>ice pick &#8211; the hole is smaller than a nail hole<\/p>\n<p>Since I want to avoid hammering into water pipes and electrical wiring while hitting wood or metal studs, maybe the best would be a metal detector and current sensor.  I&#8217;m just amazed at how poorly the electronic stud finders are rated.
